Chamart Limoges

When you think of fine things from France, many things come to mind; perfume, silk scarves, fine cuisine, exquisite wine and champagne. Although there are many copies, nothing comes close to the original. Take champagne for example; there are many sparkling wines, but only those made in the Champagne region of France can truly be called Champagne. The same is true of Limoges porcelain. While porcelain is produced all over the world, only porcelain made in the west-central Limoges region of France can be honored with the name Limoges.

To really understand the Limoges box, one must not think of it as a porcelain box, but as a precious piece of art. When one understands the process of creating Chamart Limoges boxes, it is impossible to associate them with being manufactured. The only part of a Chamart Limoges box that is manufactured is the actual porcelain paste. After the paste is produced, it is sent to various small studios. There are various studios because each has its own specialty. For example, one might specialize in animals, while another might be a master with flowers. All of the work is completely hand painted; no decals, no stencils, just the masters creating their amazing craft.

The average production of each individual box is 750 - 850. Chamart has a precise numbering method. The first two digits of the style number of each box is the year in which it was created. Many producers would consider this to be a limited edition. Chamart does have limited editions that are entirely made by hand right down to the mold. The maximum number of pieces in a Chamart limited edition is 300 and since each one is individual, each one is slightly different.

The next time you see a Limoges box, consider how it was created and ask yourself these questions:
Is it made in Limoges, France?
Is it completely hand painted?
What number is the "limited edition?"

OR you can save yourself the trouble and look for Chamart Limoges and be rest assured that you have the utmost quality available.
